1What these terms cover
aria.fm is free, open-source software (MIT license) maintained under the cmdly project. These terms cover two things: the aria.fm desktop application, and this website. By downloading, installing, or running the application, you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not install the software.
There is no aria.fm service, no aria.fm account, and no server operated by the project. The application runs entirely on your machine, and the website is a static page. Nothing here creates an ongoing obligation to you, and nothing here is a subscription.
2Not affiliated with Spotify
aria.fm is an independent, unofficial client. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or supported by Spotify AB or any of its affiliates. "Spotify" and all related marks belong to Spotify AB. References to Spotify on this site and in the application are descriptive: they identify what the software connects to.
3Your Spotify account is yours to keep in good standing
aria.fm requires your own Spotify Premium account. Using it does not change your agreement with Spotify: their terms of use, their acceptable use rules, and their decisions about your account continue to apply in full, and they take precedence over these terms in any conflict.
Practically, that means a few things are on you:
- You are responsible for how the application is used under your account, including anything it writes to your library — likes, playlists, and follows are real changes to your Spotify account.
- Third-party clients are used at your own risk. The project cannot guarantee that Spotify permits, tolerates, or will continue to permit any particular client, and cannot help you if your account is limited, suspended, or terminated.
- Do not use aria.fm to break Spotify's rules — no sharing credentials, no automated or artificial streaming, no reselling access.
4The music is not ours
Everything you hear through aria.fm — recordings, cover art, artist images, lyrics — belongs to the artists, labels, publishers, and platforms that own it. The MIT license on this software grants you rights to the software and to nothing else. It gives you no license, ownership, or permission of any kind in any music or other content delivered through it.
Do not use aria.fm to record, rip, redistribute, or circumvent access controls on content, or to strip or defeat any digital rights management. Those uses are outside what the project supports, and they are your responsibility and your legal exposure alone.
5Your license to the software
The application is released under the MIT license. The full text ships with every build and lives in the source repository. It lets you use, copy, modify, and redistribute the software freely, including commercially, provided the copyright notice and license text travel with it. Where the MIT license and these terms disagree about what you may do with the code, the MIT license wins.
One request that is not a legal condition: if you distribute a modified build, don't ship it as plain "aria.fm". Give it a name that makes clear it isn't the official one, so problems in your build don't land in this project's issue tracker.
6Downloads, updates, and third-party services
Official builds are published on the project's GitLab releases page, and this website is served by GitLab Pages. Your use of GitLab is governed by GitLab's own terms. Builds obtained anywhere else — third-party mirrors, repackaged installers, community packages — are not controlled by the project and carry no assurances from it. The AUR package is community-maintained.
"Check for updates" only tells you a newer release exists; it installs nothing without you. There is no obligation to publish updates, maintain compatibility with any version of Spotify's platform, or keep any feature working. The project may change, break, or discontinue anything at any time, and the software may simply stop functioning if the services it depends on change.
What the software does and does not transmit is described in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
7No warranty
The software and this website are provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. No one warrants that the software will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or compatible with your system, your hardware, or any version of any third-party service.
This restates the disclaimer in the MIT license, which is the operative one.
8Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the maintainer and contributors are not liable for any claim, damages, or other liability — whether in contract, tort, or otherwise — arising from the software or its use. That includes lost or altered playlists and library data, loss of access to any third-party account, data loss, device or system problems, and any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss.
Because the software is supplied free of charge, no aggregate liability cap needs stating: there is no payment to refund. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
9Your consumer rights
If you are a consumer, mandatory consumer-protection rights under the law of your country of residence apply regardless of what these terms say, and nothing here removes or reduces them. Where a provision of these terms conflicts with such a right, that provision does not apply to you and the rest of the terms stand.
10Changes to these terms
Changes take effect when published on this page, with the effective date updated above. Because this site is version-controlled, the full history of every change is public. Continuing to use the software after a change means you accept the revised terms; if you don't, uninstall it.
